Once the two overlapping images are registered in the observer’s mind, the eye shuttles between comprehension of one and then the other, as they wrestle for priority. Step back, and the image, deprived of its scrutinisable details, curdles grimly into an all-encompassing skull, grinning gothically from the shadows. Stand close to the black-and-white drawing and it appears to be little more than a depiction of a familiar domestic interior scene: a woman sitting at her dressing table (or “vanity”) staring at her reflection in the mirror opposite. Believed to be the first artist since antiquity to employ such an illusion as a dimension of interior design, Mantegna breathed new religious life into a pagan trick. Mantegna saw the flat surface of a canvas or ceiling as an opportunity to take an observer’s eye and soul on a spiritual journey inwards, upwards, and outwards. The evaporative effect is the handiwork of Italian artist Andrea Mantegna – a genius of dramatic foreshortened perspective and depicting figures illusionistically di sotto in sù (or “below upwards”). Impossibly, the barrier of the ceiling appears to have dissolved, revealing an invisible architecture that telescopes towards heaven, thrusting your soul in the direction of the divine. ![]() Suddenly, a shaft of unalterably beautiful blue sky beckons through a round aperture (or oculus) rimmed with angelic figures. To stand in the centre of the medieval bridal chamber of the Ducal Palace in Mantua and look up is to see the enclosed space magically widen above you. The result is a work that is at once amusing and profound – one that reminds the observer not only of the perishability of life but how our physical existence is comprised, materially, of the fragile world around us. Painted by the 16th Century Milanese Mannerist Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who would later inspire the imaginations of 20th Century Surrealist painters, Reversible Head With Basket of Fruit tricks the eye into the restless exercise of constructing and destroying one image in favour of the other. The fibrous lashes of his chestnut eye wink at you playfully to punctuate the visual joke. ![]() Flip the oil-on-panel work on its head, as if shaking loose the fruit that fills the wicker basket, and suddenly the plumped-up portrait of a stranger assembles itself from the bright jumble of assorted sweetness. Tilt the painting one way and it is a vibrant heap of autumnal bounty, as apples, pears, grapes, and figs puzzle for position in an alluring, if seemingly conventional, still life. ![]() This would seem to be better because you get more control, but it means it's simply harder to get good results. They ofthen have multiple sliders to dial in a correction LR does with 1 slider. Their problems are usability.ĭarktable is the worse. So, feature-wise DT and RT are head of LR. Lightroom is "light-years" ahead of DT and Rawthereapee. Seems like most people use Lightroom and was wondering what features they have that the free ones don't? It's just that your random chance that an interesting tutorial is based on LT and not DT are much higher, so you have to translate and try to replicate the effect as best as you can. There are also a few video tutorials that do exist. I very much appreciate the work that went into DT from the deep math and technologic knowledge behind it to the effort put into explaining things to users. It's immensely helpful and a lot of work went into that. ![]() ![]() There is a fat PDF out there that explains all the modules and what they do. I've never tried if commercially bought presets/plugins etc would be transferable to DT but I highly doubt it, since the logic that powers DT seems to have been developed completely independently and not modeled on LR.ĭT actually has very good and readable user documentation, especially for a FOSS program. You can also use them to batch edit many pictures at once. You can save your own presets in DT and apply them to other pictures. Still, I keep wondering how much better my photos could be if I knew better what I was doing and learn by precisely replicating tutorials instead of guesstimating what I do. I love the look and the workflow and that it works seamlessly with my equipment. I love DT, it's hugely powerful and has an enormous amount of modules. I got used to DT over RT initially because I preferred the interface and it was closer to LR so I could better profit from the wealth of information out there. Especially the famous clarity tool in LR doesn't exist in DT as such, and sliders will have different values and/or be called differently although they may do the same. If you try to achieve a certain effect and you follow the tutorials you find but the results aren't there, you never know if your picture isn't good enough, you're too dumb, the tutorial is dumb or if it's down to differences in the software. One thing that is almost worth paying for Lightroom is that every effing tutorial out there, be it YouTube, books or random websites, is based on Lightroom. Now, while Photoshop has the nicer interface and some tools are better integrated, GIMP's menus and workflow seem much more logical and natural to me and I prefer it now. I grew up on Photoshop and hated GIMP's interface, but eventually I became too lazy to reboot into Windows and got used to GIMP. Just as with Photoshop and GIMP, there is a huge habit aspect to it. Personally I use Darktable on Linux and am quite happy with it. ![]() ![]() You can even build some caravans to establish trade routes or build some wonders which can provide very beneficial bonuses to your nation militarily, culturally, and technologically. Use other settlers to improve the terrain within your city radii. You can use them to fortify border cities or to attack your enemies. To do so, do not keep building settlers, but instead order your cities to produce military units and send them to the borders of your nation. When you finish your expansion because you cannot expand further without overlapping city radii, you must let your cities grow. You can send the settlers to land not owned by your enemies, you can send your settlers to explore new islands with triremes or caravels, or you can use the settlers to irrigate and improve your home land. You can then send “bodyguards” (defensive units) with your settlers to steal terrain from your opponents by simply founding new cities within their “borders.” Or you can skip founding new cities near enemy territory and send the settlers to other lands that are not yet owned. You can then send your best defensive units to fortify the city.Ĭontinue settling cities until you are surrounded by your opponents. Try not to locate a city on a hill if this implies losing out on encompassing a special tile within that cities’ radius. Locating cities on defensive bonus tiles such as hills provides any military unit fortified in the city with additional defenses. When building cities along the borders of your nation, or where you know there will be attacks, it’s better to locate the city on terrain tiles which have a defense bonus if possible. You can later improve the terrain within the city radius and in the later stages of technological advance, transform the terrain to better suit your cities’ needs. Build cities even when there are not specials within the city radius. Try to not leave gaps between cities, and create the necessary cities to fully fill all of the terrain. Placing your cities beside ocean tiles will allow your city to grow as fast as possible, and it will enable you to build a Harbor later for further increasing food output. Probably, the best specials for fast growth are Whales and Fish, which are in ocean tiles. So the best places to settle new cities are where these specials fall inside the 2×2 city radius. ![]() The cities use the tiles around their location (2×2) and the tile the city is located on to produce food, shields and trade. The best places to settle a city are near specials. You can use worklists to build a defender in every city and then begin building settlers. Then use these new cities to build more settlers. So the first thing to do is to build as many settlers as you can to found new cities. More land means more population, more resources and more trade. One of the key things in a game is the amount of terrain a civilization has control over. Seeing that the 2023 Season will commence on March 30th, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that The Show opted to release its new game two days prior, which they did last year as well. The Show officially announced its release date for the 2023 edition on January 30th at 12PM PT. MLB The Show 23 is set to launch on March 28th, 2023. No matter how disappointed I was last year, I’m on the hype train for MLB The Show 23 and can’t wait to see what else is in store.MLB The Show 23 – Release Date Copyright MLB The Show 23 Instead, those features were nerfed compared to their Tech Test versions and ultimately didn’t seem to affect gameplay positively at all. Those tweaks looked great and sounded as if they’d actually lessen the gameplay woes we’ve been experiencing. I look at the additions of Dynamic PAR and Dynamic PCI last year as perfect examples. There’s plenty of nuance in the gameplay tweaks that can lead to significant improvements or end up being trivial bullet points. But so far, everything SDS has announced truly sounds amazing and has me more excited for ‘ 23 than I was for last year’s game at this time. I was incredibly excited for MLB The Show 22 only to be entirely underwhelmed and disappointed in the gameplay experience. We do this song and dance every year and so much can change between now and getting our hands on the game. It’s easy to get caught up in pre-release hype for every game. It would also lead to way too many steals as the limit was approached, so I applaud SDS for skipping this, at least for now. It would guarantee extended griefing with players continually exceeding the limit and forcing balks, prolonging the game. The pick-off limit rule is also being skipped in favor of the overall gameplay experience, and I think that’s a good call. The actual pitch clock will not be in the game per MLB’s rules, but the DD pitch clock remains. These shift changes are implemented, and while you’ll still be able to tweak your alignment, your options will be limited to the new rules.ĭiamond Dynasty always had an AFK pitch timer, forcing pitchers to throw the ball after six seconds of inactivity. With infielders now being reduced to two infielders on both sides of second base and on the infield dirt, MLB The Show 23 will follow suit. The shift has long been a conversation in baseball circles as it overtook the league and changed the way defenses lined up on the field. ![]() Major League Baseball is adopting some new rules for 2023 and one of the big ones is the defensive shift ban. Much of this will depend on how SDS pumps out attributes this year, but I think this will be a really interesting change of pace and add a cool wrinkle to DD. This change with Clutch becoming important in key situations will affect card evaluations and potentially alter the meta landscape. For years now, Contact and Power ratings were the be-all-end-all for hitters while H/9 was the main attribute the community focused on. This has the potential to be a powerful dynamic in Diamond Dynasty. The same will be true with pitchers (both SP and RP) as their H/9 rating disappears in favor of their pitching clutch rating. Now, a batter’s contact rating goes out the window in favor of their clutch rating with runners in scoring position. Contact and H/9 have long been hugely important in the pitcher/batter battle. When runners are in scoring position, both pitchers and hitters will now see their clutch rating come into play. Speaking of significant gameplay changes, we’re getting a pretty big one with the clutch attribute modification. That’s a huge win for the integrity of gameplay and the competitive meta. If these changes truly do affect fielding and poor fielders finally become a significant liability, the addition of the DH will allow DD players to continue using their favorite hitters while not having to sacrifice fielding. We’ll talk more about the addition of the universal DH, but these fielding changes tie directly into that addition. Will it happen enough to cost you runs and make you question using Thomas at 1B? Only time will tell, but this is hugely exciting to me if it plays out the way SDS said it will. ![]() ![]() This can reduce the overall success rate on tough plays by poor fielding first basemen like Frank Thomas. This isn’t the fully fleshed out idea that I had, but it’s definitely a good start. The significance here is that the first baseman will have to pick the ball on the bounce and the success rate will be determine by the first baseman’s fielding attribute. If you release your throw in the yellow portion of the throw meter, it will be a guaranteed dirt ball each time. Force throws to first base will now have an added layer of depth. Another new addition is something that I specifically called out and asked for, although in a different form. ![]() Pierrepont joined Accel in 2013 and led investments into fintech startup Anyfin and security automation firm Tines, among others.
